As a British Cycling coach I value the British Cycling Code of Conduct and British Cycling Health and Safety Guidelines for Coaching Cycling. I have children and grand-children and understand the protection these young people should expect from someone in ‘authority’ so have attended Safeguarding & Protecting workshops. Important to me are the values of mutual respect; honesty; integrity, teamwork, equity and personal pride.
UK Anti-Doping: Coach Clean (UK Coaching endorsed) I believe that you get out of the sport (or anything in life) that which you are willing to put in – the effort and commitment has to come from both coach and rider(s). I will not tolerate the use of any banned performance enhancing drugs, and believe in fair play. I have a ‘zero tolerance’ for cheating. Cheating is something not to be proud of, personal gain and victory should be awarded to they who deserve the achievement through honest training and performance.
My focus isn’t necessarily on winning, there may be occasions where winning is possible and should be embraced, but it isn’t the be all and end all. Coaching is about delivering sound techniques, improving skills, passing on tactics and broadening rider awareness, empowering them with the ability to enjoy their cycling to the full. Some riders will just want to ‘ride their bikes’ and some will want to be the next Bradley Wiggins, my goal is to try and equip them with the opportunity to further their potential, improve their ability, and enjoyment along the way.
With Youth and Juniors, I expect the riders and parents to support an amicable code of conduct between all parties, and promote feedback. The focus has to be on the rider enjoying what they are doing.
I expect to mentor and assist future club coaches, hoping that they will have similar values within their coaching philosophy.

Born 1959 in the Vale of Evesham, and grew up in Worcester. A keen cyclist from the age of 10, where weekends were taken up with as many places I could escape to on my bike. Left home one day on a single speed freehub BSA bike only to return 80 miles later at the grand age of 12! Content as long as I had sandwiches, drink and lights. My playground was Worcestershire, the Malverns, Gloucestershire and Shropshire
