Check out our next ride
A vehicle to enable 14-U23s to ride using local routes on a Saturday morning - supported by local coaches. All local club riders and non-club riders are welcome. Previous members of SJCDG are always welcome to support-ride too!! A pre-determined starting point, with pre-announced route and number of laps, rather than a longer distance loop or out-and-back is used, enabling any riders who 'drop-out' to be within a reasonable distance from the start. Contact me for further details about joining the Group rides.
Just a few words for anyone thinking of getting a coach for their child..........
"My daughter was riding to a good standard national races RSR sessions and in the first year as an under 16 she had a good year but the pressures of school and the looming GCSE year made second year U16 look like juggling in the dark, making life hard for her and myself as Dad.
At the end of the season, I spoke to Dave about taking her on and him coaching her. The process was easy but reassuring for both mum and myself as well as our daughter. Dave’s attitude to school health and wellbeing was reassuring and fitted with both my daughters’ ambitions as a racer and our family view that education came first and world domination on a bike was plan B. My daughter worked with Dave agreeing aims for the coming season, targets training races and how this would fit in with her education. We were kept in the loop throughout.
Year 11 is stressful enough without fitting in a full season of races up to national standard in 3/4 cycling disciplines. The results spoke for themselves with my daughter reporting the structure of the training, allowed her to study, have teenage fun and turn up at races feeling strong fresh and with race tactics discussed and process goals set for the event.
Dave coached her for four years from youth to junior racing track road time trials and the occasional CX race with some great results, but to sum up her view of the benefits of having a coach, she got her dad back! I did not have to say, you should train, or you should do your studying, because there was a structure, regular contact with Dave who shared her training plan and she fed back how she was feeling what the school or college work loads were breaks for revision and exams reduced stress.
So, all in all a coach (the right one, I’d suggest Dave) reduces parental stress on all fronts allowing the riders to focus on the important stuff, have parents who are parents and someone with in-depth knowledge and life experience on hand, to discuss challenges, worth the investment."
